Miss Newton came to New Milford during the First World War after studying art in Washington and New York. She was entranced with the old homesteads, rolling hills and historic landmarks and began to record these places to ensure that these images survived. Her work is faithful to the smallest detail, of the rooms and exteriors of old Connecticut houses. She saw the real, not the pretend, and with her rare talent she created beauty out of the daily subjects of her life. Edith Newton achieved national recognition. Her work is in the permanent collections of several major museums and recounted in the book American Prize Prints of the 20th Century. The book reproduces 40 of her works and stories that go with them.
