Short Biographies of Exhibited Artists in the NMHS Helen Morton Cox (1869-1946) - Portrait copyist. John F. Clymer (1907-19--) - Illustrator. Historically accurate artist of Western scenes and wildlife. In 1947 he did a cover for the Saturday Evening Post of the New Milford Green. He designed a commemorative coin of John and Sarah Noble for the 250th anniversary. Nathaniel Currier (1838-1862) - Lithographer. Issued portraits, views and pictorial records using wood block and then in the 1850's and 60's lithographic stone. He formed the firm Currier and Ives (1862-1901) with his student, who carried on after his death. Ralph Earl (1751-1801) - Painter of portraits and historical scenes. Born in Leicester, Mass. Went to London after the war and studied with Benjamin West. He returned to America in 1786.He painted his subjects as royalty on large canvases showing their surroundings through an open window (in the manner of Copley). He died of intemperance in Bolton, CT. Earl may have been a friend of Elijah Boardman - there is a letter in the Wadsworth Athenaeum to Earl from Boardman, telling him to come back to New Milford as Jennys is working here. Eastman Johnson (1824 - 1906) - Genre and portrait painter. James Sanford Ellsworth (1802-1874) - Miniature painter. Made several copies of Gilbert Stuart's full-length portrait of Washington. He painted Lawrence Taylor 1830-1840. Benoni Erwin (1840-1896) - Painter. Born in Newmarket, Ontario, died in South Coventry,CT He was a pupil of the National Academy of Design in New York and had studios in San Fransisco, New York, and Baltimore. He painted William Diamon Black, Judge David Curtis Sanford, and Emily Bull Sanford from photograph in 1895. Guiseppe Fagnani (1819-1873) Born in Naples, he came to New York in 1851. He attracted attention with his painting of the " Nine Muses" at the Metropolitan Museum of Art because well known "Beauties" posed for him. Daniel Huntington (1816-1906)-Portrait and genre painter. Benoni Irwin (1840-1896) - Painter. Born in Newmarket Canada, died in Coventry CT Pupil of the National Academy of Design. Richard Jennys (1766-1799) - Engraver. Itinerant portraitist active in New Milford area 1794 through 1798. His ability and technique differ from other itinerants of the time, he poses subjects within an oval. His work concentrates on the faces, bringing them into greater relief and is not as showy as the large canvases of Ralph Earl or Copley. He painted Elisha Bostwick and family 1787-1789. William Jewett (1795-1874) - Portrait painter. Formed a partnership with Samuel Waldo and collaborated in painting many prominent men. The museum owns two landscapes by Jewett and a portrait of David Sherman Boardman by Waldo and Jewett. William Smith Jewett (1812-1873) - Portrait, landscape and genre painter. Born in South Dover, N.Y. Worked in New Milford, Salisbury and Kent. Elected ANA. In 1849 went to California to look for gold but became California's first professional artist. Died in Springfield, Massachusetts. Our collection includes two landscapes done in 1833 and 1838. Philip Kappel (1901-1986) - Etcher and engraver. Early work in Salem Mass. Had studios in New York, New Milford and Roxbury CT Admitted to "Who's Who in America" when he was only 23 years old, just three years after graduation from Pratt Institute. Sascha Maurer (1897-1985) Poster and advertising illustrator. Born Munich, Germany came to the U.S. 1925. Established a school in watercolor with studios in N.Y. and Gaylordsville, CT C.H. Moore - A landscape painter of "decided merit". Dictionary of American Painters by Fielding. Edith Newton (1878-1964)-Artist and Lithographer. Exhibited at the 33d Annual Exhibition of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. She is a recognized artist whose work is in the collections of several major museums and libraries-Including The Whitney Museum and the Library of Congress. Rebecca Taylor Porter (1841-1902) - Portrait painter. John Ramage (1763-1802) - English Miniature Painter Nathaniel Rogers (1788-1844) - American Miniaturist Woldemar Neufeld (1909-) - Artist and sculptor. Born in the Ukraine, moved with his Mennonite family to Waterloo, Ontario in 1924. After graduating from the Cleveland Institute of Art, he came to New York City became known as "Artist Laureate of the East River". In 1949 he moved his family to New Milford, CT. There he established his principal studio and an art school, keeping a workshop in N.Y.C. H.W.Snyder (1800-1900) - Engraver-Portrait painter Jane Stuart (1812-1888) - Painter. Youngest daughter of Gilbert Stuart, was the best known and most prolific portraitist in Newport during the 1st century. A skillful copyist she reproduced many of her father's paintings, especially his portraits of Washington. Samuel Lovett Waldo (1783-1861) - Portrait painter. Studied with Stewart, and in 1806 in London with West and Copley at the Royal Academy. William Jewett became his pupil in 1812, after which they became partners.
